{"id":1058,"date":"2020-07-17T06:09:51","date_gmt":"2020-07-17T06:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utkalaage.in\/?p=1058"},"modified":"2020-07-17T06:09:54","modified_gmt":"2020-07-17T06:09:54","slug":"siksha-o-anusandhan-a-mission-to-create-global-citizens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/?p=1058","title":{"rendered":"SIKSHA \u2018O\u2019 ANUSANDHAN&#8211; A MISSION TO CREATE GLOBAL CITIZENS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From a humble beginning\nover two decades ago, Siksha \u2018O\u2019 Anusandhan Deemed to be University in\nBhubaneswar, known more by its acronym SOA, has emerged today as a shining\nacademic edifice where quality education and innovative research are the\nbuzzwords. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A socially inclusive\ninstitution of higher education, SOA has been churning out professionals in\nvaried fields today ready for the requirements and challenges of different\nsectors. The core belief at SOA, ranked among the top twenty universities in\nthe country this year, has been that a centre of higher learning must ignite\nthe desire in the student to go through the process of learning not to get a\njob, but illuminate the society with his or her learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The society\u2019s need\ntoday, SOA feels, is of more number of people with humanitarian values who can answer\nthe needs of the society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOA came into existence\non July 17, 2007 when the HRD Ministry conferred on it the status of a Deemed\nto be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. It has since grown to be\nregarded as a centre of superlative professional education with its focus on\nresearch and a strong academic foundation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The multi-campus\ninfrastructure of SOA is home to more than 12,000 students, including from six other\ncountries, who have chosen the Deemed to be University to chart out a future\nfor themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though just 13-year-old,\nSOA is being continuously counted among the top 25 universities in the country\nby the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of HRD, for five\nconsecutive years now. Ranked 20<sup>th<\/sup> in the country this year, it has\nalso remained the top institution in the university category in Odisha for the\nfifth consecutive year obtaining a score of 53.10 this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NAAC, which has termed\nSOA as socially inclusive, has re-accredited it with the highest grade in\nrecognition of its quality academic activities. Programs of SOA\u2019s faculty of\nengineering and technology have been accredited by the prestigious\nAccreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), an internationally\nreputed US-based accreditation agency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOA was globally ranked\nrecently when it found place in the Times Higher Education (THE) World Ranking.\nThe Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, SOA\u2019s faculty of medical\nsciences was ranked 23rd in the country by NIRF this year. Incidentally, IMS is\namong nine medical colleges in India which have found place in the THE World\nRankings list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\nper the NIRF rankings this year, SOA\u2019s faculty of engineering and technology\nwas placed 34th in India while its faculty of dental sciences was positioned 12<sup>th<\/sup>\nnationally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IMS and SUM Hospital, a\n1600-bed teaching hospital, was in the news recently when it was chosen by the\nIndian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) as a human trial centre for the\nmuch-awaited vaccine against the Coronavirus pandemic. The hospital, regarded\ntoday as one of the most favoured healthcare destinations in the east, is also\nthe first hospital in Odisha to successfully undertake Bone Marrow\nTransplantation (BMT) and live donor liver transplantation. The USP of the\nhospital, which deploys excellent modern and advanced diagnostic, surgical and\nlife- saving equipment, is that it extends quality medical facilities for\npatients at an affordable cost. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the country was\nensnared by the Covid-19 pandemic, a worldwide crisis today, SOA stepped\nforward to partner the Odisha government in setting up three full-fledged\nCovid-19 Hospitals and two Covid Care Centres (CCC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While a 525-bed\nCovid-19 Hospital (with 25 ICU beds) was set up in its own campus in\nBhubaneswar, two other hospitals with 176 and 150 beds respectively were being\nrun by the university at Kendrapara and Talcher respectively. Doctors, nurses\nand para-medic personnel from the IMS and SUM Hospital were manning these\nfacilities. The CCCs were established at Jatni and Jamujhari in Khurda\ndistrict. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOA offers 24 Under\nGraduate and 71 Post Graduate, 10 Post Masters, Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral\nprograms in engineering and technology, management, medical sciences, dental\nsciences, nursing, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, hospitality and\ntourism management, law and agricultural sciences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOA\u2019s focus being on\nresearch, it has set up 13 research centres which have been working in 22\nidentified thrust areas. The centres include the Centre of Excellence in\nTheoretical and Mathematical Sciences, Multi-Disciplinary Research Center,\nCentre for Nano Sciences and Nano Technology, Centre for Applied Mathematics,\nCentre for Rural and Tribal Development, Centre for Reproductive Health,\nNational MEMS Design Centre, Centre for Bio-Fuel and Bio-Processing and Centre\nfor Environment and Climate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the ongoing\nresearch work is supported by grants sanctioned by several external agencies\nincluding the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of\nBiotechnology (DOB), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO),\nScience and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Life Science Research Board (LSRB)\nand Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Thirtyeight\nlaboratories have been attached to the Research Centres. Work of the faculty\nmembers and research scholars regularly get published in reputed peer reviewed\ninternational journals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university has 4839\nScopus indexed publications to its credit so far with H-index of 54.\nResearchers at SOA have so far applied for 99 patents of which 72 have been\npublished and patents granted in five cases. Four of these patents related to\nthe Centre for Nano Sciences and Nano Technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The infrastructure\ndeveloped by the university includes a 1400-seat stateof-the-art convention\nhall which is today the preferred venue for many international and national\nlevel conferences. SOA\u2019s 127 acre fully wi-fi campuses have a total built up\narea of nearly 4.5 lakh square meters and has 197 e-enbaled class rooms, 340 PG\nand UG labs, fully automated libraries with ample Print Learning Resources, 10\nstudent activity centres and multiple ISP connectivity (more than 2Gbps). It\nhas one central library, 9 institutional and 42 departmental libraries. The\ncentral library has a floor area of 11,617 square meters. \n\n\u2018Jaago\u2019, an initiative of the university with\nstudents at the forefront, has been working among slum children taking care of\ntheir education, nutrition and hygiene.
