Preparations are underway at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here for the commencement of the second phase of the human clinical trial of \u2018Covaxin\u2019, India\u2019s indigenous Covid-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Phase I of the trial is still continuing as we are\nplanning for the start of the Phase II trial shortly,\u201d Dr. E. Venkata Rao,\nPrincipal Investigator of the trial at IMS and SUM Hospital, faculty of medical\nsciences of the SOA Deemed to be University, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The blood samples collected from the volunteers who\nreceived the vaccine were to ascertain how effective the vaccine was in terms\nof the level of antibodies developed, Dr. Rao said adding that there had been\n\u2018no side effects\u2019 in the first phase trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IMS and SUM Hospital is one of the 12 medical centres\nin India chosen by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) for\nconducting human trial of the vaccine developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat\nBiotech as the Coronavirus was spreading in the country fast. It is the only\nmedical center chosen in Odisha for the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTwo doses of the vaccine were administered to each\nvolunteer after they were selected through a screening process conducted over a\nperiod of three to seven days prior to vaccination. The first dose was\nadministered on Day Zero while the blood sample was collected. The second dose\nwas given on Day 14 and the blood sample was also collected,\u201d Dr. Rao said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blood samples of the volunteers will also be collected on\ndifferent days (28, 42, 104, 194 day) for\nestimating the duration of protection subsequently,\nhe added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Rao said there\nwas a lot of enthusiasm among people to be part of the second phase of the human\ntrial.
