{"id":1234,"date":"2020-12-02T08:16:13","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T08:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utkalaage.in\/?p=1234"},"modified":"2020-12-02T08:16:19","modified_gmt":"2020-12-02T08:16:19","slug":"sum-hospital-conducts-second-liver-transplantation-in-odisha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/?p=1234","title":{"rendered":"SUM HOSPITAL CONDUCTS SECOND LIVER TRANSPLANTATION IN ODISHA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For the second time in Odisha\u2019s medical history, a living-donor liver transplantation was successfully undertaken at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medicine of SOA Deemed to be University, here on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The first ever liver transplantation\nin the state was also conducted at IMS and SUM Hospital on March 5 last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A team headed by Prof.\nP.Balachandran Menon of Hyderabad-based Asian Institute of Gastroenterology\n(AIG) and GI surgeon Dr. Satya Prakash Roychoudhury from IMS and SUM Hospital\nconducted the marathon 12-hour long surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Prof. Manoj Kumar Sahu, Head of the\ndepartment of Gastroenterology at IMS and SUM Hospital, said the surgical\nprocess began at 4 am in the morning and continued for 12 hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The beneficiary of the liver transplantation\nwas Mr. Umesh Kumar Rout of Sambalpur, a 49-year-old teacher, who received a\nportion of the liver of his sister Ms. Anita Kumari (41). \u201cMr. Rout was\nsuffering from end stage liver disease and the only option available was to go\nfor liver transplantation to save his life,\u201d Prof. Sahu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 40-member team, comprising doctors, nurses and paramedics\nfrom multiple specialties including Gastro Intestinal surgery, Hepatology,\nAnesthesia, Cardiology, Urology, Nephrology, Radiology, OT, Infection Control,\nCentral Lab and Blood Bank had been constituted for the purpose earlier. A\nMemorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed earlier between AIG and IMS and\nSUM Hospital for conducting the liver transplantation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"656\" src=\"http:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/liver-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1236\" data-link=\"http:\/\/utkalaage.in\/?attachment_id=1236\" class=\"wp-image-1236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/liver-2.jpg 864w, https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/liver-2-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/liver-2-768x583.jpg 768w, https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/liver-2-86x64.jpg 86w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Explaining the procedure, Prof. Sahu said about 60 per cent\nof the donor\u2019s liver was first taken out while the diseased liver was removed\nfrom the patient simultaneously in a separate OT. The new liver was implanted\nwith the surgeons attaching the arteries, veins and bile ducts perfectly.\nRotem, a new technology was used to monitor the coagulation parameters of the\nrecipient. Both the donor and recipient had been extubated after surgery, he\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The surgery was supported by a\n10-member team from AIG led by Prof. Menon, Director of Liver Transplantation, other\nmembers of the team being Dr. G.V.Premkumar, Dr. Shakti Swaroop, Dr. Krishna\nChaitanya and Mr. Santosh Kumar Sahoo.&nbsp;\nThe core transplant team at IMS and SUM Hospital included, Dr. Sumit\nMohanty, Dr. Satya Sundar Gajendra Mohapatra, Dr. Santosh Kumar Singh, Dr.\nRajib Lochan Samal, Dr. Debakanta Mishra, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Bhola, Dr. Girija\nNandini Kanungo and transplant coordinators Mr. Susanta Kumar Biswal and Mr.\nSaroj Senapati. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Prof. Menon expressed his\nsatisfaction at the facilities available at IMS and SUM Hospital for such\nhigh-end surgeries saying the team members were very cooperative and fast\nlearners. The hospital could emerge as a centre for transplant surgeries in the\nfuture, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was the dream of SOA\u2019s Founder-President Prof.\nManojranjan Nayak to start liver transplantation in Odisha and the first such\nsurgery created history in the state,\u201d Prof. Sahu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Prof. Sahu, who has provided\nleadership for such surgeries in the hospital with the support of the Medical\nSuperintendent, Dr. Pusparaj Samantasinhar, said liver transplantation had\nbecome a reality in Odisha when the first such surgery was conducted at IMS and\nSUM Hospital on March 5.
