Javeline star Neeraj Chopra, who created history by winning India\u2019s first Olympic track and field gold medal since independence at Tokyo last week, was treated by an expert in sports surgery and sports medicine here for shoulder pain four years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chopra was\ntaking part in the Asian Athletic Championship being held at the Kalinga\nStadium in July 2017 when he walked into the clinic of Dr. (Major) Sarthak\nPatnaik, specialist in orthopedics and sports medicine, with a friend one\nevening complaining of pain in his right shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI examined\nthe young athlete and found that the pain was mostly muscular and tendinous. We\nmanaged the pain conservatively while his friend was treated for a hamstring\npull,\u201d Dr. (Major) Patnaik, presently Senior Consultant in the Arthroscopy,\nSports Medicine and Surgery Department at SUM Ultimate Medicare here, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI found him\na very soft spoken, humble and down to earth sportsman. He was very happy to\nknow that I was a retired army officer myself,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chopra went\non to claim the gold in men\u2019s javeline throw at the championship which was held\nfrom July 6 to 9, 2017. Chopra won the\nevent with a throw of 85.23 m, a championship record, beating Ahmed Bader\nMagour of Qatar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cToday I am\nvery proud that Chopra has proceeded to win a gold medal in the Olympics and I\nwill always cherish the memory I had with him four years ago,\u201d Dr. (Major) Patnaik\nsaid adding \u201cI wish him to win many more laurels for the country in future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. (Major)\nPatnaik is an expert in ligament and cartilage reconstruction surgery, shoulder\narthroscopy and sports surgery having done a fellowship in the subject from\nPennsylvania Sports Medicine Department, USA.
