The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medicine of Siksha \u2018O\u2019 Anusandhan (SOA) here, is initiating steps to set up an advanced Rheumatology Centre to promote research and reach patients with the latest treatment regimen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institute had become the first\ncentre of medical science in Odisha which has been permitted to start DM course\nin Rheumatology with two seats, Prof. Pusparaj Samantasinhar, Medical\nSuperintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital, told a news conference on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cRheumatism\nis a disease which has been affecting a large number of people with five to ten\nout of 1,000 people afflicted by the problem and there is a need to create\nawareness about it and its management,\u201d Prof. Pradipta Sekhar Patro, Head of\nthe Department of Immunology and Rheumatology in the hospital, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Prof.\nSamantasinhar said Prof. Patro had been at the forefront of the battle against\nCovid-19 as IMS and SUM Hospital managed five stand alone Covid Hospitals across\nOdisha in collaboration with the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Prof. Patro,\nwho studied at the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences,\nLucknow, where advanced treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is available, said\nthe proposed centre would be patterned after the Lucknow institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cThe\nImmunology and Rheumatology department in our hospital has emerged as the\nleading centre for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in Odisha and patients are\nbeing extended efficient treatment at low cost,\u201d he said adding it boasts of\nhighly qualified doctors and equipped with the most sophisticated equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            It also has\nan Immunology and Auto Antibody Lab for testing of blood of the patients at\ncheaper cost. Blood samples were being earlier sent to labs outside the state\nfor test leading to higher expenditure, Prof. Patro said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease of\nthe joints which requires prolonged treatment from a trained rheumatologist.\nBut lack of awareness has been causing patients to seek treatment from other\nmedical sources without much benefit, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doctors at the Rheumatology OPD in\nIMS and SUM Hospital have been treating patients by using Musculoskeletal Ultrasound\nwhile other facilities like rehabilitation therapy, physiotherapy and\noccupational therapy were available under the same roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
