{"id":1877,"date":"2023-06-25T11:49:30","date_gmt":"2023-06-25T11:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utkalaage.in\/?p=1877"},"modified":"2023-06-25T11:49:31","modified_gmt":"2023-06-25T11:49:31","slug":"first-in-odisha-sumum-retrieves-organs-from-brain-dead-patient-to-save-four-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/?p=1877","title":{"rendered":"FIRST IN ODISHA\u2014SUMUM RETRIEVES ORGANS FROM BRAIN DEAD PATIENT TO SAVE FOUR LIVES"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a first in Odisha\u2019s medical history, multiple organs\nretrieved from a brain dead patient at the SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) here\non Saturday was rushed to three different cities for transplantation providing\na new lease of life to four critical patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In an exceptional achievement,\nmultiple organs including two kidneys, two lungs and the liver were retrieved\nfrom Prasenjit Mohanty, the brain dead patient, with the support and approval\nof his family while excellent coordination through government agencies enabled\nthe organs to be flown to two private hospitals in New Delhi and Kolkata for\ntransplantation, Dr. Swetapadma Dash, Chief Executive Officer of SUMUM, told\nnewspersons here on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The police created a green corridor\nin Bhubaneswar for transporting the organs in two ambulances from the hospital\nto the Biju Patnaik International Airport from where the same were flow to the\ntwo cities accompanied by outstation medical teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Of the two kidneys, one was\ntransplanted on a waiting patient at SUMUM last night while another was taken\nto the S.C.B. Medical College Hospital at Cuttack for transplantation on another\npatient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The two lungs were flown to a\nprivate hospital at Kolkata to address the critical condition of a 16-year-old\nboy suffering from paraquat poisoning who endured a challenging 45-day wait for\nthe organs while being supported by ECMO. The liver was transported to another\nprivate healthcare facility in New Delhi providing life saving opportunity to another\ncritical patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Forty three-year-old Mohanty, who\nhad suffered severe head injury after a fall, had been admitted to SUMUM on\nJune 22 and underwent emergency brain surgery, Dr. Somnath Prasad Jena,\nConsultant Neurosurgeon at SUMUM said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-1-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1881\" data-link=\"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/?attachment_id=1881\" class=\"wp-image-1881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-1.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-1-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-1-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-1-86x64.jpeg 86w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cThough his condition somewhat\nimproved following the surgery, it deteriorated subsequently and an Apnea test\nconducted on June 23 yielded a positive report signifying that the patient was\nbrain dead. A second test was done after six hours which confirmed the earlier\nreport,\u201d Dr. Jena said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dr.\nDash said when the family members were informed about the patient\u2019s medical\nstatus, they offered to donate his organs as it could help to save the lives of\nothers. \u201cIt was a momentous decision and we salute Ms. Mrudumanjari Mohapatra,\nwife of the patient, for her bold decision to donate the organs though there is\ncultural resistance to such practice in the society,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-0 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The hospital alerted the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) and subsequently information reached the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) and National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) about the development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Medical teams from Kolkata and New\nDelhi reached SUMUM on Saturday and a 20-member team comprising surgeons from\nSUMUM and outstation doctors retrieved the required organs in a procedure that\ntook four and half hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ms. Mohapatra, wife of the deceased,\nwho was present at the press conference, said her husband had earlier wished\nthat his organs should be donated. \u201cWe also thought if his organs could help\nsave the lives of four other persons, why not go for it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dr. Dash said the hospital had\ndecided to provide employment to Ms. Mohapatra for her bold and selfless\ndecision. \u201cHer decision is a trendsetter and we have to try for mindset shift\nin the society as regards organ donation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brig (Dr.) Biraj Mohan Mishra, SUMUM\u2019s Chief of Medical\nServices, also hailed Ms. Mohapatra\u2019s gesture while thanking her family members\nfor their support in donating the organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"706\" src=\"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3-1024x706.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1879\" data-link=\"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/?attachment_id=1879\" class=\"wp-image-1879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3-300x207.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/utkalaage.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3-768x530.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; SUMUM\u2019s team of neurosurgeons and\ncritical care experts, comprising Dr. Jena, Dr. Vithal Rajnala and Dr. Alok\nPanigrahy, both Critical Care Consultants, played a crucial role in ensuring\nthat the brain dead patient remained in stable condition making him eligible\nfor organ donation, Dr. Prasanta Kumar Panda, Medical Superintendent of the\nhospital, said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The organ retrieval process involved a team of highly skilled doctors including SUMUM\u2019s Dr. Priyabrata Das, Dr. Jitendra Kumar Barad, both Consultant Urologists, Dr. Dipankar Padhiary, Dr. Bhabani Pati and Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Parida, all Consultant Anesthesiologists, along with collaborative teams from S.C.B.
