For two Indian aviation professionals, those moments came four decades apart.

In 1986, it was Neerja Bhanot, the senior flight purser aboard Pan Am Flight 73. In 2026, it was Captain Smit Machchhar, the pilot of Flydubai Flight FZ1073.

Their emergencies were very different. But in both, passengers depended on the people responsible for their safety to act under extraordinary pressure.

Neerja Bhanot: A Final Act of Courage

On September 5, 1986, Pan Am Flight 73 was at Karachi airport when four armed hijackers seized control of the aircraft.

Bhanot alerted the cockpit crew, enabling the pilots to escape. She and the cabin crew were then left to protect the passengers during the prolonged standoff.

When the hijacking descended into chaos, Bhanot helped passengers reach an emergency exit. She continued assisting others rather than escaping herself.

She was fatally shot while helping passengers flee, including children.

Bhanot was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award. Her name has since become closely associated with courage and self-sacrifice in Indian aviation.

A Cockpit Emergency, 40 Years Later

On September 30, 2026, another extraordinary aviation emergency unfolded aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

According to reports, Captain Smit Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot inside the cockpit. The aircraft subsequently experienced a rapid descent, while 174 people were on board.

Despite being injured, Machchhar reportedly managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers, cabin crew and other pilots travelling on the aircraft were then able to enter the flight deck and intervene.

The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Machchhar was taken to hospital for treatment.

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including the co-pilot’s actions and motive, remain subject to investigation. Some details reported by passengers and media have not yet been independently established.

Different Emergencies, Shared Responsibility

Bhanot faced armed hijackers. Machchhar faced a violent confrontation inside the cockpit.

What connects them is not that the incidents were identical, but that both professionals were placed in situations where passenger safety depended on their actions under extreme pressure.

Bhanot’s final moments became part of India’s aviation history. Machchhar’s experience is still unfolding as investigators establish exactly what happened aboard FZ1073.

Their stories, separated by 40 years, nevertheless point to the same responsibility at the heart of aviation: when passengers place their lives in the hands of a crew, protecting those lives is the duty that matters most.

From Neerja Bhanot’s sacrifice during the 1986 Pan Am hijacking to Captain Smit Machchhar’s actions during a 2026 cockpit emergency, two stories separated by four decades have drawn attention to an enduring principle of aviation: the safety of passengers comes first.
