IMS AND SUM HOSPITAL GEARING UP FOR SECOND LIVER TRANSPLANTATION

After registering a first in Odisha’s medical history by successfully conducting a living donor liver transplantation in March last, the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here, faculty of medicine of the SOA Deemed to be University, is preparing to conduct its second such transplantation towards the end of this month.

            “We are planning the second living donor liver transplantation this month in collaboration with a surgical team from the Hyderabad-based Asian Institute of Gastroenterology,” Prof. Manoj Kumar Sahu, Head of the department of Gastroenterology at the hospital, said.

            The nine-hour surgery was conducted on March 5 last when 55-year-old Jayanta Biswal of Nilagiri in Balasore district received a portion of the liver of his son Soumya Ranjan Biswal. He was suffering from cirrhosis of liver, an end stage liver disease. Both the father and son have recovered and doing well.

            The hospital has already created a large team comprising experts from various departments including Gastro-intestinal surgery, Cardiology, Critical Care, Anesthesia, Nephrology, Urology, Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Hematology Lab, Path Lab, Blood Bank and Nursing. Members of the Bio-medical, Dietics and Central Sterile and Supply department also were included in the team.

            A felicitation was organised in the hospital on Friday to hail the efforts of the team which created history on March 5 and encourage the members ahead of the second such path-breaking surgery.

            Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Gangadhar Sahoo, Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital, said the department of Gastroenterology of the hospital had been doing and excellent work in experimental and advanced surgery and it deserved all encouragement.

            The Medical Superintendent, Prof. Pusparaj Samantasinhar said the achievements of the institution had caused people to repose their faith in the hospital. The department of gastroenterology had a highly experienced team to conduct such surgeries, he said.            Prof. Rajesh Lenka, Additional Medical Superintendent, Prof. Ajay Kumar Jena, Additional Dean, Dr. Premananda Pattnaik, Head of GI Surgery, Prof. Satya Sunder Mohapatra, Head of Radiology, Dr. Satya Prakash Raychoudhury, Associate Professor, GI Surgery and Dr. Debakanta Mishra, Associate Professor, Gastroenterology, among others, were present.
